Thousands of Palestinians took part in a
demonstration in Gaza Strip on Friday in a show of solidarity with their
fellow citizens locked in Israeli jails.
The demonstration, called by Hamas and Islamic Jihad, aimed at supporting
the Palestinian prisoners who have been on an open-ended hunger strike, which
is on its 11th day.
The prime minister of the Palestinian government in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh, a
number of ministers, MPs and senior officials from Hamas and Islamic Jihad
took part in the demonstration.
Minister of prisoners Atallah Abu Al-Sabh said the hunger strike was a step
towards freedom.
He said the Palestinian prisoners were suffering and their rights and
freedom were being violated. "This is disgrace to whoever claims to be free
and democratic," he added in reference to Israel.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials called for speedy release of prisoners.
They urged the UN Human Rights Council, the Arab League and Organization of
Islamic Cooperation to fight for the rights of the Palestinian prisoners. |
