Saudi King Abdullah told Egyptian military ruler
Saturday that he would study, in the next days, Cairo's request to reopen the
embassy and two consulates as well as return the Saudi Ambassador to Egypt.
Saudi Arabia had earlier in the day recalled its Ambassador to Egypt for
consultations, closed the embassy and the two consulates in Alexandria and
Suez following protests against the Saudi diplomatic missions.
People were protesting Saudi Arabia's arrest of Egyptian human rights
lawyer Ahmad Al-Jezawi, who was detained for reportedly insulting King
Abdullah.
Head of Egypt's ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal
Hussein Tantawi, in a bid to contain the dispute, called King Abdullah and
urged him to consider the decision, state-run news agency (SPA) reported.
The Saudi Monarch, answering Tantawi, said he would study the issue in the
coming days "in consideration to circumstances and interests of the two
countries out of the long history of friendly relations between the two
countries," it said. |
