Arab League Chief phones FMs of Saudi Arabia, Egypt

Arab League Secretary General Nabil Al-Araby phoned on Sunday Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal and Egyptian counterpart Mohammad Kamel Amr. Arab League Chief expressed, in a statement, his confidence in the wisdom by the two countries to overcome current developments, noting on the historic relations between the two countries. Al-Araby added that he was also very confident that the bond between the two countries would enable the political leaderships of both countries to overcome any obstacle, noting as well on Arab joint work being the bases of their work. The Egyptian Higher Council of the Armed Forces stressed anew importance on the exceptional relations and strong ties between Egypt and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A statement by the council said that the two countries enjoy historic and strong relations, and will work relentlessly to overcome the matter. The statement added that the council hopes that both countries will continue working and avoid any destabilization to the brotherly relations. Also earlier, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry reassured the public opinion on the legal procedures being taken by the Saudi authorities against an Egyptian detainee. Last week, the Egyptian Consulate in Jeddah, southwest of Saudi Arabia, received a phone call from an Egyptian lady saying that Ahmad Al-Jizawi, an Egyptian national, was arrested for political reasons upon his arrival at Jeddah airport on his way to perform an "Umra' (minor pilgrimage). The consulate sent a urgent note for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to follow up the case. The ambassador in Riyadh met Prince Saud Bin Nayef, chief of staff of the Saudi Crown Prince and Minister of Interior's office, seeking explanation of the affair and demanding an early release for Al-Jizawi, according to the statement. In the evening of Monday, April 23, Al-Jizawi's wife contacted the consulate to inform that her husband was detained at the Saudi drug combat department, Al-Sahafa St. Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammad Kamel Amr, who was informed of the case, phoned his Saudi counterpart and asked him to allow the Egyptian consul to meet Al-Jizawi. The meeting took place on the same day and lasted for more than 90 minutes, the statement added.
