Dutch gov't could scrap burqa ban

Outgoing Dutch interior minister Liesbeth Spies was quoted saying by a Dutch newspaper that the proposed burqa ban can be scrapped. "The House wants to put the dual citizenship in the trash. If that happens with the burka ban, I will not shed a tear," she told the Volkskrant newspaper in an interview published today. The Dutch coalition government last month collapsed when anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders, leader of the Freedom Party, pulled out his support due to disagreement over austerity measures. The dual nationality and burqa bans were his top priorities. In January, the Dutch had voted to ban burkas and other face-covering garments from public places. The legislation had still be approved by both houses of the Dutch Parliament Spies has announced her candidacy for the leadership of the Christian Democratic Appeal party.
