Al-Kuwait progressed to the Round of 16 in the AFC
Cup in spectacular fashion after a 7-1 home drabbing of Maldives outfit VB
Sports on Tuesday.
The Kuwaiti club joined Al-Ettifaq in the next round as second in Group C
after the Saudis, with three groups yet left to be determined.
Scoring early for his side in the fourth minute, Ali Al-Kanderi fired into
the net after a cross from Abdulhadi Khamis, who later added his own in the
second half.
Brazilian, Rogerio Coutinho near to the end of the first half added his
side's second after rifling a shot from the edge of the box.
At the last minute of the first half it seemed the Maldives outfit were all
about a come-back, scoring in the 45th minute after a howler from goalkeeper
Abdulrahman Al-Husainan.
But Al-Kuwait maintained their stunning performance, adding five more
through Kuwaiti international Walid Ali and Cameroonian forward Arnaud Nsemen,
crushing the hopes of the visitors from attaining any more points other than
the one that keeps them at the bottom of the group.
The two top Group C teams will meet the opposite top two in the
undetermined Group A on May 22 for the first knockout stages of the
tournament, with Al-Kuwait poised with a chance for an all-Kuwaiti affair with
Qadsiya, who currently lie second in their group, trailing only two points
behind Jordan's Al-Faisaly. |
