France on Friday praised the holding of Algerian
legislative elections which it said were held "calmly and without major
incident".
An official statement here said that Paris "welcomes the effort at
transparency through the welcoming of a European Union observation mission"
during the electoral process in Algeria.
"We await the conclusions of the commission shortly," the French statement
said.
France, which is the former colonial power with Algeria and has had patchy
relations since the liberation of 1962, reiterated its friendly intentions
toward the Algerian people and its wishes for success for the next legislature.
The new parliament will have the job of constitutional reform "in the
framework of the reforms announced by President (Abdulaziz) Bouteflika and
expected by the Algerian people," the statement added. |
