The National Change Current, a Syrian opposition organization, welcomed on Wednesday a package of sanctions approved by The European Union (EU), including the freeze of funds of two institutions working for Bashar Al-Assad's regime, beside three individuals. In a statement, the current demanded that the EU expand the sanctions to cover institutions and individuals offering financial support to the Syrian regime, "which is of a great backing to the genocide it is practicing on the Syrian people since the last 14 months." The statement accused a number of countries of supporting the Syrian regime in selling the state's gold reserves and marketing the treasury bonds. Curbs contributing to stifling the Syrian regime economic system would not help in overthrowing the regime, but the international community should immediately work to stop the killing and displacement of people, destruction of houses, buildings and infrastructure. Anoher opposition group, Building the Syrian State expressed sorrow for failure of the Arab League in holding a meeting of the Syrian opposition that was scheduled today. This reflects the Arab League and ministerial committee lack of understanding of the Syrian cause and confusing methods in dealing with the complicated conflict in the country, it added. The current called on the Arab League to step away from the Syrian cause, and the opposition's affairs, after it proved its inability of achieving any remarkable progress to end the Syrian crisis or alleviate suffering of the Syrian people. The Arab League idea of uniting the opposition is inverted logic that puts importance on the foreign political interference rather than the internal, it added. United Nations-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan said that he understands the Syrian situation in a better manner, and that Syria is not only about a number of traditional political parties, or a number of foreign organizations or countries considered as a reference in judging the situation in the country, as approved by the Arab League. The real active political trends are present inside Syria, and they are only qualified and capable to help Annan in his mission, the opposition movement added. It called on all the political blocs in Syria to be aware enough of national duties. The Arab League postponed Syria opposition meeting that was due today, after it received a request for the delay from the Syrian National Council (SNC), and National Coordination Authority for Forces of Democratic Change, for further consultation and coordination among the opposition parties.
