France welcomed on Friday the extension of the
mandate of UN Human Rights Commissioner Navanethem Pillay, who has been given
another two-year mandate.
Pillay was confirmed to continue in her post by the UN General Assembly on
Thursday "by consensus" after a proposal from Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon.
The Human Rights Commissioner has "the unfailing support of France,"
Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero said in a briefing.
The decision to extend her mandate "reaffirms the support of the
international community for the determined action of Mrs. Pillay towards the
promotion and protection of human rights in the world," he added. |
