02 4 GEN 0127 KUWAIT /KUNA-JTT9 KUWAIT-POWS In memory of Kuwait's POWs June 25, 2012 It has been more than 20 years since the brutal Saddam invasion and occupation of Kuwait, and the fate of many of the 600 Kuwaiti and other POWs is still unknown. The POWs; men, women, children, and elderly, were rounded up from the streets and homes of Kuwait by the Iraqi forces, who invaded the country on August 2, 1990. All calls and appeals by Kuwait and other states, as well as world organizations, have so far failed to establish their whereabouts or ascertain their fate. Only 236 remains have been found and identified so far. Since that time, the families of these POWs are suffering and yearning to lay their loved ones to rest, unable to be reunited with them.
