Palestinians seek to foil plan to demolish houses

Palestinian National Authority plans to launch a diplomatic campaign aimed at foiling an Israeli scheme to demolish large parts of the town of Salwan located close to the holy city of Jerusalem, a senior official announced on Thursday. Dr. Riad Al-Maleki, Minister of External Affairs, accused in remarks broadcast by Voice of Palestine radio Nir Barakat, Chairman of Jerusalem Municipality, of drawing up a scheme to demolish Al-Bustan district in the town, particularly all houses inhabited by Palestinians. The municipality is planning to build a public park, hotels and tourist facilities in the district, he said. Up to 1,500 Palestinians are expected to lose their houses as a result of this project. Israeli police have already given notifications to the inhabitants in this respect.
