Tunisian swimmer Oussama Mellouli snatched Friday
the gold medal in 10-km marathon swim, taking his country's London Olympic
medals tally to three.
Mellouli finished the race with a time of 1:49:55.1, over three seconds
ahead of his closest competitor, Thomas Lurz of Germany.
This is the second medal for Mellouli who has won the bronze medal in Men's
1500m Freestyle swimming contest.
Mellouli's gold is the second to be won by Arab Olympians in the London
Olympic Games 2012 after that of the Algerian runner Taoufik Makhloufi in the
Men's 1500m marathon.
London has proved to be particularly fruitful for the current batch of
Tunisian Olympians. In addition to Mellouli's dual medals, Habiba Ghribi took
home a silver medal in the Women's 3000m Steeplechase, and the handball team
posted their best Olympic performance in their history, marking Tunisia's
single most successful Olympic showing in the modern era. |
