Health Minister: Patient safety first, quality is non-negotiable

Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi said Wednesday that patient safety is the cornerstone of all health services and that quality of care is non-negotiable, calling health a basic right. Speaking at a Ministry of Health (MoH) event marking World Patient Safety Day, held this year under the theme "Safe care for every newborn and every child," he cited World Health Organization (WHO) reports showing that stronger safety systems and quality programs have saved millions of lives over the past two decades. The ministry is observing the day with an integrated plan that includes targeted initiatives, guidance, and performance checks, he mentioned. The "Safety Star Award," now in its 11th year, honors excellence in patient safety, he said. Al-Awadhi noted Kuwait pushed for safety since the early 2000s through establishing a quality and accreditation directorate, co-drafting the "Nine Patient Safety Solutions," implementing pharmacovigilance, and requiring cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training as well as continuing medical education for health workers. Law No. 70 of 2020 on medical practice protects the rights of patients and practitioners and ensures safe, comprehensive care aligned with global standards, he added. He thanked healthcare staff and avowed the ministry's commitment to continuous improvement. The event honored the 2025 "Safety Star" winners, outstanding primary-care policy committees, and distinguished nursing teams.
