Dr. Asmaa Al-Kandari, Consultant of internal medicine and gastroenterology at Jahra Hospital, represented Kuwait on Saturday, by performing two live procedures before conference attendees. The procedures included the removal of a tumor in the appendix using colonoscopy and the removal of a tumor in the transverse colon using advanced endoscopic techniques. The procedures were conducted during the annual conference of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, held in Milan from May 14 to 16, 2026, with the participation of leading experts and specialists from around the world. In a statement to KUNA, the Ministry of Health said that Dr. Al-Kandari is also participating as a speaker in a multidisciplinary scientific session discussing the evaluation and triage of complex gastrointestinal disease cases. The session brings together specialists in gastroenterology and digestive endoscopy, oncology, surgery, and histopathology in a scientific model that highlights the importance of integration among medical specialties to reach the best treatment decisions for patients. The Ministry noted that Dr. Al-Kandari's participation is particularly distinguished as she is the only participant from the Middle East in the program, representing Kuwait among a group of global experts from 13 different countries. It added that, on the research front, she presented a scientific paper on the use of Artificial Intelligence techniques to assess the depth of gastrointestinal tumors. The study explores the use of AI-supported endoscopic technologies to help determine the depth tumors, improve the accuracy of therapeutic evaluation, and support medical decision-making. The Ministry noted that the Conference features more than 12 scientific tracks, live endoscopy demonstrations, and the participation of experts from five continents, highlighting the latest innovations and treatment techniques in the field.
