The Arab League warned on Thursday that Israeli occupation plans and practices in violation of international law continue to obstruct international efforts aimed at resolving regional issues, foremost among them the Palestinian cause. In a statement marking the 59th anniversary of the June 5, 1967 setback, the League said the repercussions of the war remain evident today amid Israel's continued occupation of Arab territories and its ongoing military operations in the region. The League noted that the effects of the 1967 war persist through Israel's continued expansion of military operations in southern Lebanon, describing such actions as a violation of international resolutions and agreements, particularly UN Security Council Resolutions 242 of 1967 and 338 of 1973. It added that commemorating the anniversary this year comes as Israeli attacks on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip continue alongside settlement expansion plans in the occupied West Bank, military operations in southern Lebanon and attacks on Syrian territory, all of which contribute to escalating tensions and threaten regional security and stability. The Arab League reiterated the established principle of international law that territory cannot be acquired by force or the threat of force, stressing that achieving peace, security and stability in the region requires ending the Israeli occupation of all Palestinian and Arab territories and realizing an independent and sovereign Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The League called on the international community, including states and international organizations, to exert pressure on Israel to halt its military actions and unlawful measures, withdraw from territories occupied since 1967, cease settlement activities, evacuate settlers from occupied Palestinian lands and provide compensation for damages resulting from what it described as its illegal occupation.
